Editing Samples
I have experience in all four stages of the editing process: developmental, substantive (line), copy, and proof. I use Microsoft Tracked Changes and Adobe Acrobat. Download any of the following PDFs for examples of my work. Most of the samples are fiction works, but I have worked on nonfiction, technical writing, and poetry.
At my job at the Utah Water Research Laboratory, I edit student and faculty journal articles, grant proposals, and marketing copy.
My Editing Philosophy
My purpose as an editor is to take the words someone has already written and help them to sing. I'm a storyteller at heart, and my passion is helping writers refine their voice, character, and plot until they have something unique and beautiful that begs to be shared with the world. I will suggest edits accordingly, but I believe the content I work on is ultimately the author’s, and I respect their decisions. I want clients to come away feeling like they were supported at every step and knowing that they produced work they are proud to put their name on. Communication is at the very top of my priority list with clients. I make copyedits and minor line edits directly in text, but I utilize queries for developmental and larger line edits to ensure the author understands and agrees with the suggested changes. Editing is a conversation, not a list of demands.

As a matter of personal values, I do not work on anything with overt sexual content or extreme profanity. As a matter of ethical standards, I am upfront about issues and stances I oppose, and I will always recommend a suitable replacement editor should the need arise. Contracts with me are binding, which means that I will complete the work I say I will, and negotiations will be fully communicated when extenuating circumstances arise. When working with me, the author always comes first.
